Trump scraps 'Dreamer' immigration program

"President Trump promised to go after violent criminals, not innocent children", Brown said.

The scrapping of the Obama-era amnesty programme known as Deferred Action for Children Arrival (DACA) by US President Donald Trump has not gone down well with the american tech giants.

In response to President Trump's announcement, the Council for Minority Student Affairs is hosting DACA Awareness week September 4 through September 8, from 12:30- 2:30 p.m. each day in Rudder Plaza.

The Trump administration is advising beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to "prepare for and arrange their departure from the United States", ABC News reported Tuesday. "While Congress can still act to protect DACA recipients, what we have now is almost 1 million wonderful people whose lives have just been thrown into a tailspin". Microsoft and Apple are offering the most full-throated defence of "Dreamers" undocumented individuals who have been in the U.S. since they were young and registered with the federal government to get work permits.

Maryland's Attorney General Brian Frosh said ending DACA will drive thousands out of the workplace and would cost the state more than half a billion dollars a year in GDP losses.

Ryan added, "I'm also encouraged by the fact that he gave us time to work out a consensus, to find a compromise". Within these six months, if the Congress does not come up with an alternative then the Dreamers could face deportation back to their home countries.

Immigration laws in the US are "a disgrace", but it's up to Congress to fix that problem, Shapiro said. "I think that's the definition of cruel". "And for that reason, DACA was fundamentally a lie that left recipients in two-year cycles of uncertainty". "There's nothing compassionate about the failure to enforce immigration laws", U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said. They are us. They are our people.

Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Dick Durbin, D-Ill., hope their bipartisan Dream Act can provide a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers.

On Tuesday, Ferguson said Congress needs to act to enshrine the protections of the DACA program into law, but he has little confidence that will happen.

"I am very aware of the consequences of this action, and I sympathize with the DACA recipient...but I am also frustrated on their behalf", CNN quotes her as saying.
