Top Indonesia judge gets 8 years in prison for corruption

The judging panel in an Indonesian corruption court sentenced to eight years imprisonment against Patrialis Akbar, a former judge of the state's Constitutional Court, for corruption during his service in the respected institution.

The anti-corruption court in Jakarta found Patrialis Akbar guilty of receiving 10,000 dollars from a meat importer. After the sentencing, he said it was up to God to decide what was right and wrong.

In 2014, Akil Mohtar, the former chairman of the nine-member panel of judges of the Constitutional Court, was sentenced to life in prison for accepting bribes.

The verdict was lighter than the sentence demanded by the prosecutors, who asked for a 12.5-year prison sentence for Patrialis and a Rp 500 million fine or another six months in prison.

During Patrialis' trial, it emerged that Basuki had also promised the former judge an additional Rp 2 billion, money which was going to pay for an apartment for a young woman that Patrialis was acquainted with (the woman admitted in court that Patrialis had already bought her a vehicle, clothes, and given her money).
