Tesla Working With AMD To Develop Chip For Self-Driving Car

AMD and Tesla are working together to achieve self-driving cars, according to CNBC.

Tesla is taking steps to decrease its reliance on Nvidia, which has supplied the electric automaker with the graphic processing units powering Tesla's Autopilot and future self-driving system.

This deal is big for multiple reasons: Tesla now secures all of its GPUs from NVIDIA for self-driving cars, which I'm sure this deal will change that. AMD's latest triumph builds on esteem earned earlier this year for its role in cryptocurrency mining. For Tesla, this is the firs ttime they've opted for a objective built AI processor, which will be using both AMD and Tesla IP. Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOGL), the parent company of Waymo, has already constructed two versions of an AI chip.

Citing a source familiar with the matter, CNBC reports that Tesla has received back samples of the first implementation of the dedicated self-driving chip. Notably one of the Tesla employees collaborating with AMD is the "chip star" Jim Keller. More than 50 people are working on the initiative under Keller, the source said. "Tesla has brought on several AMD veterans after hiring Keller, including director Ganesh Venkataramanan, principal hardware engineer Bill McGee and system circuit design lead Dan Bailey".

AMD shares closed up 62 cents, or nearly 5%, at $13.74, following CNBC's headline, and are up another 87 cents, over 6%, at $14.62, in late trading. At time of publication, the stock was sitting at $14.20 per share.
