Statewide restoration efforts ahead of schedule — Georgia Power

By Monday morning, most Miami streets were drying up, though they were covered with debris.

More than 21,000 workers around the state had been putting in 16-hour shifts in the field as soon as it was safe to do so. As of Tuesday afternoon, that number had decreased to 3.4 million.

FPL said on Monday it was doing final checks before bringing back nuclear reactors that were powered down as Hurricane Irma hit Florida.

After Hurricane Irma took power from residents across Georgia, crews have been on the job to ensure power is restored.

Appalachian Power was sending about 400 workers from its coverage areas in West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee to both Georgia and Florida. And, customers can report and check the status of an outage 24 hours a day by contacting Georgia Power at 888-891-0938.

"They assess, they call back to dispatch and let them know what materials are needed, and that's when you see the bucket trucks roll in, " Ms. Gibbs said. "That's not true", he said.

A deadline of September 22 has been set for restoring power to customers in the company's western counties, which include all or parts of Manatee, Hardee, Sarasota, DeSoto, Charlotte, Lee, Hendry, Collier and Monroe.

Wilma, a devastating storm in its own right, did not reach as many areas of the state as Irma and affected only 21 counties, he said. "We thought we were going to have to move it to friends' houses who had power".
