Sexually Spread Diseases Rise in San Diego County Amid Nationwide Spike

All three of these diseases respond to antibiotics, but there is a growing threat of drug-resistance gonorrhea.

There were more than 2 million new cases of gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia across the U.S.in 2016 - the highest number of new cases of those diseases ever.

The CDPH released their 2016 STD Annual Report this week and found STD cases are at an all-time high in California.

In San Diego County, gonorrhea had the most significant increase with 35 percent more cases than the previous year, according to the county's recent report.

Not including HIV rates (reported separately), it reports a rise in STDs across the USA for a third year in a row.

Some of the alarming highlights include: syphilis rates increased by 17.6 percent over 2015, including a 35 percent increase in women.

But the most commonly reported STD in San Diego County and across California is chlamydia. About 9 percent of women ages 15 to 44 used IUDs in 2009; almost 12 percent used them in 2012, according to the Guttmacher Institute. Most of these cases - 80.6 percent - occurred in men who have sex with men, but rates among women rose 36 percent, and rates among newborns rose 28 percent. Pregnant women exposed to the disease can suffer stillbirths and deformities in their babies. At the top of their list, one East Alabama county has the highest per capita rates of chlamydia and gonorrhea in the entire country.

More than 600 cases of congenital syphilis were reported past year, resulting in over 40 deaths and "severe health complications" for babies, according to the CDC. Gay and bisexual men remain one of the groups disproportionately affected.

Treatment and prevention programs for STDs have been diminished by budget cuts, health officials said.

Commenting on the statistics, Dr Gail Bolan, of the CDC, said, 'Not that long ago, gonorrhea rates were at historic lows, syphilis was close to elimination, and we were able to point to advances in STD prevention, such as better chlamydia diagnostic tests and more screening, contributing to increases in detection and treatment of chlamydial infections.
