Satellites show Hurricane Katia crawling to the Mexico coast

Storm Katia builds in Caribbean as Irma strikes

Hurricane Irma - at Category Five, the highest level on the Saffir-Simpson scale - battered a string of Caribbean islands on Wednesday and appears to be on a collision course with southern Florida.

Jose is expected to be a major hurricane by Friday.

At the same time, Hurricane Jose is spinning just behind Irma about 1,060 kilometres east of the Lesser Antilles.

The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder or AIRS instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite captured infrared temperature data on Hurricane Jose on September 8 at 12:53 a.m. EDT (0453 UTC).

It's now moving west-northwest in the Atlantic Ocean and could slow in the next couple days, the hurricane center says.

"It also has the potential to significantly strain FEMA and other governmental resources occurring so quickly on the heels of (Hurricane) Harvey", Evan Myers, chief operating officer of AccuWeather, said in a statement. Hurricane watches have now been issued for the islands of Antigua and Barbuda.

Any possible impact to the United States is still unclear.

Katia is moving toward the west-southwest near 3 miles per hour (6 km/h) and this general motion is expected to continue until the system makes landfall within the hurricane warning area by early Saturday, Sept. 9. It's still early days for Jose, so projections for this storm could change.

Maximum sustained winds are near 90 miles per hour (150 kph) with higher gusts.

"I have little doubt Irma will go down as one of the most infamous in Atlantic hurricane history", he said.

Unlike Hurricane Irma's path, Hurricane Jose is forecast to move north and away from Puerto Rico and remain in the Atlantic Ocean, avoiding numerous chains of Caribbean islands that Irma has wrecked.

It's the first time since 2010 that three active hurricanes have been in the Atlantic, according to CNN Weather.

This is the first time on record that the Atlantic has had two hurricanes with winds of more than 150 miles per hour at the same time, Colorado State University meteorologist Philip Klotzbach said. It's forecast to pass close to St. Martin over the weekend.
