Rian Johnson says The Last Jedi is almost complete

The film, which is the sequel to "Star Wars: The Jast Jedi" due out this winter, was originally set to hit movie theaters in May 2019, but the director dilemma caused the Disney-owned studio to push back the release date to December 20, 2019.

Gordon-Levitt has appeared in almost all of Johnson's films so it makes sense he'll pop up for at least a hot second in The Last Jedi. The movie follows in the footsteps of The Last Jedi, which similarly was initially scheduled for a summer release before being pushed back to December once the Disney higher ups realized that it's probably better not to rush things, considering how close to the wire Rogue One ended up being thanks to the movie's heavy reshoots.

Episode IX is supposed to be the last movie in the nine-part Star Wars saga, but a strong showing is likely to lay the groundwork for other spinoff projects, not to mention merchandising opportunities for years to come. Han Solo lost both of its original directors, and much of filming is being redone from scratch under the guidance of new director Ron Howard. Lucasfilm announced that not only will Abrams be directing Episode 9, he'll also be writing the screenplay alongside Chris Terrio (Argo, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice).

Despite personnel changes behind the scenes, Star Wars has become a major success story for Disney following its 2012 purchase of Lucasfilm. Some Star Wars fans and film and TV-focused outlets such as IndieWire pointed out that they would have liked to see Lucasfilm choose a minority director to improve diversity behind the camera.

Director J.J. Abrams arrives as a guest at a premiere of the film "Arrival" in Los Angeles, California, U.S., November 6, 2016. Step outside of the box and you will be replaced.
