Raw: Church Shooting Suspect Charged With Murder

Emanuel Kidega Samson

Nashville Police Chief Steve Anderson said Engle "stopped this madness, so we're very, very, very grateful to him".

Kaitlyn Adams, a member of the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ, hugs another church member at the scene after shots were fired at the church on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017, in Antioch, Tenn.

When he entered the church Sunday, Samson brought in a.40-caliber handgun and a 9mm handgun, according to the Tennessean.

"Mr. Samson didn't expect Mr. Engle to encounter him, to struggle with him, to try to stop the shooting", said Don Aaron, the spokesman for the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. None of their injuries were life-threatening, police said. His phone was traced to an address in Nashville, the report states.

Engle, who apparently did not have his concealed weapon with him inside the church, confronted the shooter and was beaten with a pistol. Police said during a press conference Monday that Samson also had an unloaded semi-automatic AR-15 rifle, as well as another handgun, but found no ammunition for the rifle.

Police in Murfreesboro, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) southeast of the church, responded to a call from Samson's father, who had reported that his son had texted him June 27 to say: "Your phone is off, I have a gun to my head, have a nice f-- life".

In March, police were dispatched to Samson's home, where he said the woman was trying force entry despite his attempts to break off contact with her. In the report, Samson is quoted saying that the woman banged on his door, got loud when he spoke with her and then pushed the door open when he tried to close it.

When he fell, Engle, despite his head injuries, ran to his auto and came back with a pistol, police said.

Samson "reiterated" what the woman said, the report notes, and she opted not to seek a vandalism warrant. He told officers he was afraid of her because she had struck him in the past.

Samson's ex-girlfriend told police that she came over because Samson "told her to and because she has property in his apartment", the officer wrote.

Minerva Rosa, who was inside the church when the shooting started, told reporters Sunday the gunman was silent when he opened fire.

Engle, in a statement from the hospital where he was treated, said he didn't want to be labeled as a hero.

"I would never say that he was like a bad person, I just couldn't say that", Martin said.

He said, "The real heroes are the police, first responders and medical staff and doctors who have helped me and everyone affected". Please pray for healing.

He asked for prayers for the victims and their families, adding, "Please pray for the shooter, the shooter's family and friends".

"We are beyond grateful for the enormous outpouring of love and compassion", the church posted on Facebook.
