Patriots notebook: Looks like players are all set to stand for anthem

The Atlanta Falcons, who squandered a 28-3 lead against the Patriots in last February's Super Bowl, maintained their 100 per cent start to the season with a hard-fought 30-26 win over the previously unbeaten Detroit Lions.

Panthers Luke Kuechly said Thursday he'd "gotten away" with a penalty vs. the Patriots' Rob Gronkowski on the final play of the Panthers' 2013 victory.

When Panthers coach Ron Rivera fielded a question about that moment, he said, "I just remember we left too much time on the clock for Tom Brady". Brady ran off the field with the referees and angrily plead his case to no avail.

"I wasn't very positive".

"I think everyone has the right to do whatever they want to do", Brady said. But yeah, that was a little unfortunate. "When you're in a locker room full of 53 players, you're working to a common goal".

The move comes just days after Patriots owner Robert Kraft, a friend of President Trump's, ripped the commander in chief for calling on NFL team owners to ban players from kneeling or displaying other forms of protest during the national anthem. The 2013 AFC Championship Game would have been played in Foxboro instead of Denver, and who knows what would have happened from there. I think that speaks a lot to their team, that particular game.

"I might have got away with one there", Kuechly said yesterday. "I think everyone has the right to do whatever they want to do". We fought back. We had some big stops.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Panthers player who was in on that play, Kuechly, had a few words on what went down. "And when you can kind of get the whole thing rolling - offense, defense, special teams - against a good team like that, it makes you feel good".

In terms of the coaching staff, Bill Belichick, when asked about it by the Panthers media brigade, brushed it aside fairly quickly.
