NFL Predictions: Arizona Cardinals vs. Detroit Lions 9/10/17

Sep 10 2017 Detroit MI USA Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson runs the ball during the third quarter against the Detroit

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford will be a team captain for Sunday's Week 1 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. Detroit's defense lacked much of a pass rush previous year, so Palmer should have time to air it out against this questionable secondary as well. The Lions made the playoffs last season at 9-7, but lost in the opening round to the Seattle Seahawks 26-6. So it is unknown how effective he will be in Week 1. The Cardinals are still a talented team but Palmer (37) may have missed his chance for a Super Bowl run as father time appears to be creeping up on the former first-overall pick. Look at Stafford's stats before and after the injury here.

It's hard to know what really happened on this play.

As for Detroit's offense, quarterback Matthew Stafford makes his regular season debut after signing a massive six-year, $135 million contract extension that made him the highest paid player in National Football League history.

Taking charge at running back will be David Johnson, the young and gifted posted an exceptional performance in last season. Abdullah will be joined by fellow running back Theo Riddick, who also was out with an injury majority of the season.

Arizona took a 7-0 lead with 11:14 to play in the first quarter, and it came after the Cardinals offense put together a six-play, 19-yard drive on the first possession of the game that ended abruptly on Palmer's interception.

Teryl Austin has really helped both Quin and Slay thrive since coming on as Lions defensive coordinator in 2014. Lawson, Wilson, Killebrew should all improve in their second seasons playing in Austin's system, which should add stability to the back end of the Lions' defense.
