New Ransomware 'Locky' Spreading Through Email, Warns Government

Locky ransomware: In the second half of 2017, a new ransomware re-emerged with new email distribution campaign namely Locky ransomware.

In May this year, computer systems across the globe saw a series of cyber attacks involving the ransomware "WannaCry".

The system infected by Locky Ransomware is getting locked or encrypted with random numbers with "extension [dot] lukitus or [dot] diablo6", the alert stated. All the malware distribution campaign has affected USA workforce in just 24 hours on August 28.

According to reports, almost 23 million emails have been sent by the attackers with attachments marked as "please print", "documents", "photo", "Images", "scans" and "pictures". The malicious emails will have zip attachments with VBS (Visual Basic Scripts) embedded as a secondary zip file. The attackers then demand ransom to unlock the files. Furthermore, you should consider not keeping external hard drives - in which you may have copied your important files - attached to your computers at all times, as access to the will also get blocked in case you become a victim of Locky. The instructions contain installation of "a TOR browser and visiting (dot) onion sites and demanding ransom of.5 Bitcoins", according to the alert issued. Besides that, they are also providing info about how to buy Bitcoin to ensure victims make the payment. The first incidents of attacks with Locky were reported early previous year.

State-run Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-in) has issued an advisory on the spreading of Locky ransonware in the country, urging users to not open any emails with attachments from unknown senders.

"Users are advised to exercise caution while opening e-mails and organisations are advised to deploy anti-spam solutions and update spam block lists", the alert said.
