Kevin Anderson can nearly taste a historic final

The last South African to make the semi-finals of the US Open was Cliff Drysdale back in 2003

He will have a chance to win his first U.S. Open title on Sunday when he faces the victor of Friday's second semifinal betwen No. 1 Rafeal Nadal and No. 19 Juan Martin del Potro. They took advantage of all of the injury absences of top players, most notably major title owners Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray, but also Grand Slam runners-up Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori.

The 31-year-old, ranked 32 in the world, is the lowest-ranked grand slam finalist since 38th-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga fell at the 2008 Australian Open final.

The 28th-seeded Anderson, a South African, is appearing in his 34th major tournament. "I really had to dig deep there, and I think my emotion at the end summed it up", Anderson said.

"It makes me feel good that I can hopefully fly a flag and show kids especially that if you work hard you can get there". It was tough for Pablo and me. "I'm just over the moon". "I'm happy to have another shot", added the 32nd-ranked Anderson.

If Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer had managed to meet in the U.S. Open semifinals, it would have felt as if the trophy were at stake right then and there. And he struck 58 winners to the Spaniard's 21.

The South African had the ideal start to the third set especially when he strolled to a comfortable service hold before earning a 0-40 lead on the return.

The 6ft 8in (2.03m) Anderson climbed into his player's box to embrace his wife, brother and coach Neville Godwin after Carreno Busta's forehand found the net to finish the almost three-hour contest.

A 20th ace sealed the set and when Carreno Busta steered a forehand into the tramlines to fall a break down in the fourth, it just left Anderson to serve his way into the final.

Anderson finished with a power-packed 22 aces and 58 winners. Anderson was the slight favorite in this encounter as he leads Carreno Busta 2-0 in their head-to-head, with their last meeting coming in Montreal this year.

With another inspiring march picking up steam with a fourth round win over sixth seed Dominic Thiem and a quarter-final upset of Federer, Nadal derailed the Del Potro train turning his dream into a nightmare. Nadal is 5-2 in his last grand slam final appearances. "Congrats to him, because we played very good match". When Nadal is playing such clean tennis, there's few who can even push him to a competitive match.

Kevin Anderson next faces either world number one Rafael Nadal in the first ever Grand Slam final of his career.

Playing in his first semi-final at the Slams since losing the longest ever last-four clash to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon in 2013, Del Potro is riding a tidal wave of emotion in NY.

"At this level, when we have all been playing for so long, it's tough to make huge adjustments and improvements".

Del Potro has been virtually running on empty.
