Kevin Anderson Beats Pablo Carreno Busta to Reach US Open Final

Kevin Anderson had been first South African to make the last four of a Grand Slam since 2003

By reaching this point - and at the time of writing Anderson was yet to play his semi-final - he has done more for South African tennis than he would have playing in the third tier of the Davis Cup.

South Africa's Kevin Anderson overcame a stiff resistance from Spain's P Carrero Busta in the men's singles semis to advance to his maiden grand slam final. They took advantage of all of the injury absences of top players, most notably major title owners Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray, but also Grand Slam runners-up Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori.

Kevin Anderson became the first South African to reach the US Open final in the Open era and his reward is a match against world No1 Rafael Nadal on Sunday in NY.

The victor of the match would meet either 15-time Grand Slam victor Rafael Nadal of Spain or 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina in Sunday's final.

He maintained his grip in the fourth set with breaks in the fourth and eighth games and as 12th seed Carreno Busta wilted, he broke again for 3-2 in the fourth in what proved the final blow.

The 6ft 8in Anderson needed some inspiration and he found it with a backhand cross-court victor that brought him level at one set all.

The Spaniard maintained the pressure, a forehand victor down the line capturing an early break and a 2-0 lead in third set.

There was a tense final game to negotiate but a Carreno Busta forehand hit the net, sending Anderson up into the stands on a victory lap.

'Of course if he play against Rafa, maybe Rafa will be the favourite, but if he play against Del Potro, I think both of players are be able to win the tournament'. I was pretty nervous with it being the first time for both of us on the sport's most famous stage.

"Here I am just nine months after thinking I might have to undergo a year's worth of recovery for surgery".

"It's been an incredible season for me and I'm so happy to get a chance to fight for another title after a couple of seasons with injury troubles", said Nadal, who won a record-extending 10th French Open title in June. Anderson finished it off on the next point.

'These Grand Slams are tough. Anderson had a chance to break for the match in the ninth game but his opponent held strong.

"This means the absolute world to me", Anderson said.

"It was very hard at the end of past year", he said. Interestingly, it is the first time in Grand Slam history that someone has faced four qualifiers in a row. Del Potro was the U.S. Open champion in 2009, when he beat Nadal in the semifinals and Roger Federer in the final. Carreno Busta has been serving very well so far this tournament. Johan Kriek is the only South African to have made a Major final in the Open Era, a feat that Anderson will be aiming to emulate.
