Jerry Jones impeding Roger Goodell's contract negotiations

The initial reaction is to assume Jones is standing up for fans who hate the direction of the National Football League under Goodell's leadership, but that's not the case. But it's not really news.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has impeded the process of finalizing Goodell's new deal, which would extend his stay through 2024.

"Jerry's not saying, 'Don't hire Roger.' He's saying, 'I hate this [proposed] deal; redo it, '" one source told ESPN.

While Jones has made it no secret that he is furious about Elliott's suspension, Mortensen and Schefter report that his issue with Goodell's proposed extension is more about how much money the commissioner is making.

This season, Goodell has seemingly made an enemy out of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who seems dead-set on suspending Ezekiel Elliott for player misconduct-despite the mounting evidence that his domestic violence accuser has been lying throughout the entire process. It's possible Blank regrets it. Owners are happy with the commissioner, they just want him to make less money. Jones has gained the support of enough owners that a discussion is being had about how to move forward with Goodell's extension. The major talking points really aren't news - but at least this week it's not year-old news about the Drew Brees contract. Goodell's next contract, if it gets done, is expected to be performance-based, and would include incentives that would enable him to earn close to what he has in the past, sources said.

Still, despite that, Goodell is in overall good standing with the majority of the owners in the NFL.

But not all owners give Goodell full credit for fueling the league's economic boon, citing the participation of the owners themselves and indicators that troubled times may be on the horizon with uncertain TV ratings, a looming labor battle and a perceived weakening of the league's image.

Jones was unavailable for comment.
