Hurricane Jose Spaghetti Models Reveal Loop Near Florida

Hurricane Jose Forecast Track

A forecast cone for Hurricane Jose as of 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017.

As people in Florida, the Caribbean and the South cope with the aftermath of hurricanes Harvey and Irma, another hurricane is spinning in the Atlantic, and forecasters aren't certain if it will impact the U.S.

The system is about 435 miles north-northeast of Grand Turk Island, and about 655 miles north-northwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Given the uncertainty of its path, a rep for the National Hurricane Center says "right now there is no concern for any land" so "no one needs to be freaking out about Jose", per the Miami Herald.

It's now moving north west, 285 miles from Grand Turk and Caicos - Barbuda and Antigua, after being hit by hurricane Irma, escaped the impact of Jose. Whether it impacts our forecast is still uncertain. It's always a bit unsafe having a hurricane hanging around, and given the propensity for this particular storm to buck forecast trends, Jose is certainly worthy of the attention.

Models show a wide range of possibilities, all the way from SC to Newfoundland, or even out to sea. The rest kept the storm out to sea.

As for intensity, the hurricane center is predicting some fluctuations up and down over the next few days.

By Friday morning, after a full six days of movement, the National Hurricane Center expects Jose to be just 300 miles away from its current position.

"Until Jose is farther along on its loop, the models are likely to have large errors, and we should not take too much comfort (or indulge in too much angst) over a particular set of model runs", said Weather Underground meteorologist Jeff Masters.
