A Hurricane Warning is in effect for.

The government of Antigua has issued a tropical storm warning for Antigua, Barbuda, and Anguilla. Residents are asked to not to let their guards down and to remain in preparation mode for this hurricane that is forecast to traverse the Leewards Islands area between Saturday 2 am and 2 pm as a category 3 hurricane.

Before Harvey, the United States hadn't been hit by a major hurricane - a Category 3 or higher - since Hurricane Wilma in 2005.

"You're approaching peak of the season, and it looks like more storms are forming, so I would expect the next few weeks to be pretty active", he said.

A Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area, in this case within 24 hours.

Barbuda, home to about 1,600 people, was "so badly damaged that there is no communication" from the island, said Keithley Meade, director of a meteorological office in Antigua and Barbuda. A turn toward the northwest with a decrease in forward speed is forecast tonight through the weekend. Jose is expected to move westward this week, and may move near or north of the Leeward Islands. Hurricane Jose has winds of about 90 miles per hour.

Category 4: Wind speeds can go up to 156 miles per hour. Some fluctuation in intensity, up or down, could occur during the next day or so.

Just as monstrous Category 5 Irma takes aim on Florida, with a predicted landfall early Sunday, Hurricane Jose has reached major hurricane status, while Katia made landfall in Mexico as a Category 1 storm.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 940 mb (27.76 inches). Rain and hurricane-force winds will intensify quickly.

The flurry of hurricanes also raises questions about whether climate change is playing a role.

The tiny islands directly crossed by Irma, like Barbuda and St. Martin, did little to weaken it, but the storm's intensity could be measurably diminished by a close encounter with a larger land mass, such as Cuba, en route to the US mainland, scientists said.

The same low-pressure trough that could stall Jose may also impact Irma's track depending on the mid-latitude system's strength, speed, and position by the time it leaves the U.S. Northeast. This rainfall will maintain any ongoing flooding and may cause additional life-threatening flooding.

Hurricane Katia, the sixth hurricane of the 2017 season, is expected to make landfall in Mexico early Saturday morning.
