Despite sending reinforcements and ships to deliver help, France, Britain and the Netherlands have been criticized for not doing enough for the islands that they oversee.

The volatile situation sparked by Hurricane Irma has led to a mass jailbreak in Tortola, one of the British Virgin Islands (BVI), where more than 100 "very serious prisoners" are now at large, the UK Minister for Europe and the Americas has said. Sir Alan said: "Over 500,000 British nationals, either residents or tourists, have been in the path of Hurricane Irma, which has caused devastation across an area spanning well over 1,000 miles".

Businessman Richard Branson, who has lived in the British Virgin Islands for the past 11 years, has called for a "Disaster Recovery Marshall Plan" for the region. "We have troops helping at the moment". He said he is now coordinating recovery efforts through government agencies, aid organizations and media to help the islands in the region.

The team were stranded in Barbados overnight on Friday - but were able to help the British Virgin Islands' governor's permanent secretary David Archer to return to the islands' main island, Tortola.

"With the security situation deteriorating in numerous affected islands all British citizens should be considered vulnerable".

Mr Johnson is expected to visit these British territories in the coming days.
