Hurricane Irma: Hundreds of animals airlifted out of the Virgin Islands

Ahead of Hurricane Maria Victory Air sent a plane to the U.S. Virgin Islands to evacuate 41 people and their pets

She had been working on plans to evacuate all the pets from all three of the U.S. Virgin Islands ― St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix ― after Hurricane Irma devastated the area. Now at her parents' home in Madison, Manes is anxious about how her island home will fare because of Hurricane Maria.

Boats picked up dogs and cats and brought them to St. Thomas from the other islands in anticipation of the furry friends' flight.

She now lives on a farm in Virginia Beach, where she runs Island Dog Rescue, which finds homes in the U.S. for abandoned Caribbean dogs. Originally, she planned to fly groups of 20 animals gathered from St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix up to the continental USA every day for a week following Irma's land fall.

She had made multiple visits to the US Virgin Islands since Irma, and was appalled at the devastation - and at the now-homeless animals left to fend for themselves.

Other posts on the Facebook page testify to an outpouring of community support for the relief effort.

Several rescue groups from across the country also met Gear and her group of heroes at the airport to transfer some of the "highly adoptable" pets to their shelters.

But her plans changed dramatically when Hurricane Maria began following Irma's route towards the islands - putting their lives in danger all over again. 'People have moved Heaven and Earth to make this happen'.

French officials who control the side of the island where Mr Trump's property is located said the area "suffered serious damage" but did not detail the exact condition of Mr Trump's estate, The Washington Post reported.

But Gear says the massive rescue mission could've been prevented.

Ms Gear wrote on Facebook that a shelter on St Croix was destroyed - bur fortunately, had been emptied of critters.

Gear said she hadn't slept more than four hours any night for nearly two weeks.
