Henderson retains captaincy as Southgate calls for Wembley backing

English striker Marcus Rashford celebrates scoring England's second goal during Monday's World Cup qualification match against Slovakia at Wembley Stadium in London

Jones earned his 22nd cap on Friday when England beat Malta 4-0 to ensure they go into Monday's clash at Wembley with a two-point lead at the top of Group F.

The winger, like his global team-mates, struggled to break down a resilient Maltese side and he was taken off at half-time, before the visitors improved after the break to eventually run out 4-0 winners.

The game follows a week in which Sterling has been suggested as a component part of City's failed bid for the Arsenal striker Alexis Sanchez, despite the 22-year-old having started the season well for his club.

Slovakia lost their next game in Slovenia but since then have won five straight qualifiers - a run it will be hard to continue against an England side unbeaten in home qualifiers since crashing to a 3-2 loss to Croatia as their route to Euro 2008 was blocked.

And Southgate said players and fans must share the responsibility for creating a winning atmosphere at Wembley.

Sterling, a £49million signing from Liverpool in 2015, was brought in with great effort, and despite Raz's arrival coming a year before Guardiola's, it is said that the Catalan boss gave his approval, something that has also been claimed of the Kevin De Bruyne deal. The whole country wants to get to the World Cup.

"It's a great opportunity for us. We are playing good opposition so we have to make sure we are tactically prepared, which we will be".

England have hardly provided much excitement in the World Cup qualifiers.

Such praise is unlikely to get to the Manchester United centre-back's head, though, and nor is the supporter angst displayed in Malta.

"It's a great opportunity for the Wembley crowd to get behind us as well".

'Not just this season, in terms of when I've been looking at him, but there was a long period last season where I think he's been the best defender'. "It's a lovely dilemma with regard to our attacking positions".

"We have some exciting players and we want to show that", Southgate said ahead of Monday's game against second-placed Slovakia, who are two points behind England.
