FPL: Power To Be Restored To South Florida By End Of Weekend

Florida governor issues new nursing home rules after post-hurricane deaths Miami during Hurricane Irma

FPL said it estimates that east coast customers will have power by the end of the weekend, except in areas hit by tornadoes, flooding and severe damage.

The storm had knocked out power to about 1.5 million customers in the state on Monday, more than a third of them in metro Atlanta. FPL said it has restored electric service to 325,580 customers in the region. Call 911 for life-threatening emergencies.

In total more than 4.5 million FPL customers were affected by the storm, with over 1.6 million having their service restored already, mostly by automated devices.

"This is the first real test of the grid following our significant investments and, so far, we are encouraged by what we're seeing", said Silagy. He asked customers to continue to have patients as in some cases, workers are going house to house to restore power. FPL said it is on track to end the restoration period Sunday.

There were 477 Tri-County EMC members waiting to have their power restored on Saturday morning, including 265 in Jones, 112 in Baldwin, 83 in Putnam County, 16 in Twiggs and one in Wilkinson. FPL will provide estimated times of restoration through the media, Facebook, Twitter and FPL.com.

Those numbers include 11,318 Georgia Power customers and 14,750 people who get service from one of the state's electric membership cooperatives.

Customers are also encouraged to remain aware that that unsafe conditions continue to exist across Georgia following Hurricane Irma. If you come to an intersection with a non-working traffic signal, Florida law requires that you treat it as a four-way stop. Do not attempt to remove or trim foliage within 10 feet of a power line. "They are down due to trees pulling them down, not the wind".

Nearly 1 million of the Atlanta utility's customers lost power during Monday's storm.
