If you're a drone owner in the United States and you're looking to fly your drone around some of the famous landmarks in the U.S., you might want to take note that the FAA has recently announced that they will be restricting drones from flying around certain landmarks in the USA, one of them being the Statue of Liberty.
The department has not given any specific reason for the sudden move, but its data website notes the action comes at the request of USA national security and law enforcement agencies due to "National Security, or Intel Agency or National Defense" concerns.
For more information on drone flight restrictions in the USA, take a moment to check out the FAA's webpage on the subject or explore the aforementioned B4UFly app. The new restrictions will take effect on October 5.
This is the first time the agency has placed airspace restrictions for drone over Interior Department landmarks. The agency has already put restrictions on flying drones over and around national parks, military bases, and airports.
Drone violators might face civil penalties and criminal charges.
The agency added that information on the new measures will be included in its free B4UFly app (iOS and Android), which offers drone pilots tips on safe flying, as well as information on restrictions and requirements relating to drone flights in the specific area they want to operate. There will be an interactive map available to those visiting the sites to ensure they are aware of the restricted locations. The FAA's announcement includes the airspace above parks and landmarks. The app will be updated within 60 days to reflect these airspace restrictions.
