Even Without Game of Thrones, HBO Claims 19 Creative Arts Emmys

On Sunday evening, the 69th annual Emmy Awards will air, bringing to the small screen witty humor from host Stephen Colbert, as well as an extremely competitive lineup of nominated shows.

Saturday Night Live, Westworld and Stranger Things have an early lead at this year's Emmy Awards after a batch of technical and guest acting awards were handed out. She's Emmy royalty, having won for Seinfeld and The New Adventures of Old Christine as well, and the recent announcement that Veep's upcoming seventh season will be its last just means that Emmy voters are likely to take every opportunity to award a show and a star that are clearly among their very favorites.

The main ceremony of the Emmy Awards 2017 will take place at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on 17 September.

With five first season shows in the mix and only two returnees, neither a past victor, this year's race in Emmy's marquee Drama Series category is anybody's ballgame and up for grabs especially since the champ for the past two years, Game Of Thrones is ineligible since it didn't air a new season during the period.

Saturday Night Live received five awards, with one of them going to Melissa McCarthy for her guest appearances as former White House press secretary Sean Spicer.

Stranger Things has scored 18 nominations at this year's Emmy Awards overall, including Best Drama Series, which is to be announced next weekend. The Ron Howard documentary about the band's touring years won two Emmys (sound mixing and sound editing). Hulu also won two awards for The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years.

Other editing winners were the Netflix Master of None episode "The Thief", which won for single-camera editing for a comedy; CBS's The Big Bang Theory episode "The Holiday Summation" for multi-camera editing for a comedy; HBO's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver "Stoplight" segment for variety programming; National Geographic's Life Below Zero "River of Rage" for unstructured reality program; VH1's RuPaul's Drag Race "Oh. My". "Hairspray Live!" also enlisted the original Broadway adaptation's choreographer Jerry Mitchell ("Kinky Boots", "On Your Feet"), original songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman ("Smash" and Broadway's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"), two-time Emmy Award-winning live television director Alex Rudzinski, award-winning costume designer Mary Vogt ("Kong: Skull Island", "Men in Back"), music director Lon Hoyt ("On Your Feet", "Hairspray" on Broadway and feature film) and award-winning production designer Derek McLane (Academy Awards, "Beautiful").

Alexis Bledel wins the guest drama actress for her work in Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale".

The actor-songwriter-producer, Common, took home his first Emmy Award on Saturday for co-writing "A Letter to the Free" for Ava DuVernay's 13th documentary.
