Erdoğan meets Iran's Rouhani, Pakistani president in Astana

President Hamid will highlight Bangladesh's success stories, initiatives and projects in science and technology and make recommendations to the OIC, according to Abedin.

OIC Secretary-General Yousef Al-Othaimeen, in a speech before the opening session, said that this summit is a historic event, since it will be the first summit for OIC heads of state and government dedicated to promoting and developing the science and technology he described as "empowering tools", and factors promoting social and economic development in these states.

President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev opened the summit held under the title "Science, Technology, Innovation and Modernisation in the Islamic World".

Erdogan, who said the killings of Rohingya Muslims amounted to "genocide", had previously criticised Muslim countries for remaining silent to the ongoing crisis.

President Hamid stressed the need for a collective effort to protect rights of this minority Muslim community in Myanmar.

President Hamid is expected to return home on 12 September.

"I believe, our cooperation in science and technology would generate more synergy and dynamism for the Ummah and enhance the image and standing of the Muslims in the world", the President.

The event is slated to give a new impetus to strengthening global ties in development of science and innovations.

The summit will be capped with the Astana Declaration on Science, Technology and Innovation, titled "science and technology for the sake of the nation".

The member-states agreed to take necessary measures for implementation of OIC Science and Technology Agenda 2026 and prepare joint programs and proposals for the goal.

In Bangladesh, he said, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Vision - "Digital Bangladesh", made enviable advancement in life sciences which was evident in the country's emerging industry of pharmaceuticals and alternative medicine and high-tech industries like ocean-going shipbuilding.

Addressing the first summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on science and technology in the capital of Kazakhstan, the Pakistani leader urged the Muslim countries to work collectively in order to meet the challenges of modern times.
