England women's football manager is to step down

Mark Sampson removed as patron of Women in Sport

Mark Sampson has been sacked as England women's head coach after a new witness came forward with allegations of inappropriate behaviour separate to Eni Aluko's claims of bullying and discrimination.

During last night's win over Russian Federation the England players appeared to show their support for Sampson as they mobbed him after opening the scoring.

Despite Sampson having been cleared twice, by an FA review and an independent investigation, the issue has not gone away.

Sampson presided over his last match as England manager on Tuesday night, with the Lionesses strolling to a 6-0 win over Russian Federation in a World Cup Qualifier at Tranmere's Prenton Park.

The FA has faced calls from anti-racism campaign group Kick It Out and the Professional Footballers' Association to look at the case again.

The entire team rushed to the bench after the 11th-minute strike.

After pointing out that numerous players seen celebrating the goal had voted for her as their representative during contract discussions with the FA, she went on to write: 'It goes without saying I'm delighted, relieved, blessed to be sat where I am right now. "A benefit for all". Blessings in disguise are often the best blessings.
