Eagles stymied in 41-7 loss at Auburn

Auburn at Miss State

To say that the Eagles' much talked about return to the option was a failure might be putting it too mildly.

"I thought it was a very good win", Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said.

The Georgia Southern offense could get nearly nothing going in the first half, with 23 rushes for only 33 yards, including a 25-yard scamper by Werts that accounted for the over two-thirds of the of the total GS first-half yardage. Kam Martin unleashed another run through a wide open lane, romping 36 yards to the end zone for a 24-7 lead that had Georgia Southern almost put away before halftime.

The Eagles began the second half with another three-and-out and Auburn followed with a drive that was capped when Stidham found Ryan Davis for a 19 yard touchdown strike.

Placekicker Daniel Carlson made a 50-yard field goal on Auburn's first drive of the game, but missed attempts of 53 and 46 yards on the second and sixth, respectively.

Stidham picked up 185 yards in the air on 14 of 24 passing to go along with the two touchdown passes he had.

Apparently, that was pure gamesmanship by Malzahn, as starting running back Kam Pettway and starting receiver Kyle Davis were both held out for unknown reasons.

After Johnson's 34-yard gain, his last carry of the night, Stidham's touchdown run gave Auburn a 17-7 lead. I think they've got a chance to be an outstanding defense. "Obviously, we have a stout defense". "Offensively, we did some good things and we did some bad things. Everybody fights for each other", quarterback Jarrett Stidham said when asked about the suspensions after the game. "This team isn't going to get down and get discouraged".

Auburn averaged 6.6 yards per carry.

Hastings led Auburn with four receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown.

Perhaps the most unbelievable stat from Saturday night's 41-7 win in Jordan-Hare Stadium was holding GSU to 0-of-15 on third down conversions. Auburn senior linebacker Tre Williams led the charge with two sacks and double-digit tackles. On top of that, his first start for the Tigers also marked the debut of first-year coordinator Chip Lindsey's offense on the Plains.

Good news for Tiger fans eager for next weekend's matchup against the defending national champions, as Auburn is scheduled to travel to Clemson.
