Donald Trump praises fans who booed National Football League players taking a knee

A week ago, just six players protested.

That set into motion a series of actions at Sunday's National Football League games across the country, with some players kneeling or locking arms in a sign of solidarity.

"It's a flawless example of where the president gets it right", said Christopher Ruddy, the CEO of Newsmax and a longtime Trump friend, who said team officials and the news media were not in line with much of the country. I think it's very disrespectful to our country.

The president's attack on athletes turned the anthems - usually sung during commercials - into must-watch television shown live by the networks and Yahoo!, which streamed the game in London.

The owners included New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who has a close relationship with Trump.

"I think the reality is that there are coaches, high school coaches, across America today who are punished for leading their players in prayer", Short told moderator Chuck Todd. "He gave me a Super Bowl ring a month ago, right? So he's a good friend of mine and I want him to do what he wants to do.", Trump said.

He also points with pride to NASCAR supporters, writing, "They won't put up with disrespecting our Country or our Flag - they said it loud and clear!"

The Pittsburgh Steelers remained in the locker room as the national anthem played before their game with the Chicago Bears.

Mr Kaepernick is now a free agent and supporters believe teams have avoided signing him because of his protest.

"The owners should meet and decide on this rule the way they decide on any other rule", Mnuchin said on CNN's "State of the Union".

Dozens of more players protested before the Raiders-Redskins game, the final one of the day and not far from the White House in Landover, Maryland. All but a handful of Raiders sat on their bench and seven Redskins took a knee while their teammates stood arm-in-arm along with owner Dan Snyder and president Bruce Allen.

On Sunday, NFL owners continued issuing statements condemning the president's divisive words and players took part in displays of unity across the league.

The national dialogue over national anthem protests in the NFL has come full circle this weekend. It began with the president calling for National Football League protesters to be fired and continued Saturday when he rescinded a White House invitation for the NBA champion Golden State Warriors over star Stephen Curry's criticism.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday night in New Jersey, Trump said players and coaches locking arms was a display of "solidarity" that he approved of. These are fans who demand respect for our Flag!

McCain raises a point that more and more Americans are starting to realize about the current state of politics domestically, and that is, that President Trump feels appears to be somewhat out of touch when it comes to the realities and needs of the average citizen.
