He could tell from the cheers that Jordan Spieth was off to a good start. Thomas didn't flinch, making birdie on the second and reaching the drivable fourth, where he knocked in a 30-footer for eagle.
That kind of all-around performance is a big reason Thomas has established himself as the golfer to beat in the Player of the Year race. It was better than that, flying fast into the shaggy collar atop the steep bunker and onto the fringe, where he rolled in a 30-foot eagle putt. "It was a patient day", said Thomas.
The game was on.
British Open champion Spieth and Leishman were two shots clear of Thomas with nine holes to play after each burned up the front nine with 30s. Spieth lost his way in the middle.
Two shots behind at the turn, Thomas surged ahead with a short birdie and a 6-foot par save while limiting the mistakes that cost his challengers. I tried to mess with things for most of the year and I just stopped trying to mess with it and just set the putter right down and hit it right there; and if it goes in, great; and if it doesn't, then it doesn't.
Despite the win, Thomas will still trail Spieth in the FedEx Cup standings heading into the BMW Championship in Chicago.
Only he doesn't sound as though he's finished just yet.
"I didn't have it [the first two rounds]".
In Thomas' first couple of seasons after turning pro in late 2013, he netted just one victory, with a handful of opportunities slipping through his fingers. Both opened with 68 in the two-day event before Spieth took a two-stroke lead on the front nine of the second day, eventually pulling away to win by five.
Spieth, who lost a play-off to Dustin Johnson in the first play-off event, told reporters: 'Obviously it was a dream start but you're not going to keep pace and shoot 54, at some point you have to recognise the hard holes are coming up and honestly it was just a difference of my long irons got off.
"On this golfcourse you have to make birdies", Spieth said. You want to get through even. "I was hitting my irons really good, giving myself a lot of chances".
World number one Dustin Johnson, who was the FedEx Cup points leader going into the tournament, finished -7, tied for 18th.
Leishman shot 30 on the front to build a two-shot lead but he had to save bogey at the 10th after an errant drive. He made three bogeys against one birdie the rest of the way for a closing 2-over 37. I only had two bogeys this week and I'm probably just as proud of that as I am winning. A bogey on No. 14 dropped Spieth to 15 under and in a tie with Leishman.
The eyes, the ears, the cameras were on noted friends Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. Thomas then parred the last three holes to seal a convincing three shot victory. Woods did it twice.
"I've been striking the ball well".
"But it's insane to think I did that and parred all the par-fives".
"I have some of my best friends have won way more than I have and won more majors", Thomas added. I'm way more mentally tough. I mean, I'm still fiery. I felt I wasn't far off but I just, I don't know, I wasn't hitting the shots.
