Deadly Hurricane Irma leaves the Caribbean as Hurricane Jose turns north

The monster hurricane that hit the Florida Keys on Sunday as a Category 4 was downgraded to a tropical storm as it pushed out of Florida and into the Southeast, where it caused more misery.

- 5.8 million customers are without power across Florida, state emergency officials said.

One death was reported in Orange County, according to CNN.

"This is going to be a frustrating event".

Irma, one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes on record before it arrived in the United States, killed 43 people in its rampage through the Caribbean and at least 12 in Florida, Georgia and SC.

"The most recent trajectory models have it impacting more of Georgia than the original projections that were designed, we thought, only to hit the coastal areas of our state", he said. It was to break up over eastern Mexico, with heavy rains still expected.

"There are so many areas that you would never have thought would have flooded that have flooded", Florida Governor Rick Scott told reporters after a helicopter tour of the area.

It killed at least 26 people before leaving the Caribbean for Florida. The storm damaged about 95% of the buildings on the island, said Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of the nation of Antigua and Barbuda.

In Florida, Credit Suisse estimated that damage from the storm could cost $125 billion, CNBC reported, while other analysts estimated the losses as high as $300 billion. More than 21,000 federal U.S. employees are working to assist Florida residents and the recovery efforts.

A large military airborne relief operation was being prepared to take help to the islands, which are linked by a dramatic series of bridges and causeways from Key Largo nearly 160km southwest to the city of Key West, Monroe County Emergency Director Martin Senterfitt said. That means winds and storm surge that began hammering Miami-Dade before dawn could continue.

St. Martin and St. Barts also escaped further damage from Jose, as French state meteorological agency Météo-France said Sunday the second hurricane took "a passage which was farther away than anticipated".

Its forward speed has slowed to 9 miles per hour (15 kph) and it has yet to make the expected big northward turn toward Florida yet.
