Daniel Ricciardo still targeting win in Singapore

The things you missed as Lewis Hamilton romps to victory in the Singapore Grand Prix

This rapid removal of the GP of Singapore is a blow to Vettethe, second three points in the drivers ' standings by Hamilton.

"God blessed me today, for sure", he said later, dripping with champagne.

"I don't think it was a racing incident".

Hamilton, who is a regular at celebrity haunts across the Atlantic with friends from the fashion and music industries as well as the world of sport, said he knew many others who had made the same decision.

"It was really unfortunate for the Ferraris but a great result for the (Mercedes) team".

The German had started on pole position on a wet track but retired with a badly damaged auto in an incident that also claimed Ferrari team mate Kimi Raikkonen and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Though the race had seemed posed to be a fight between Ferrari and Red Bull for victory, that all changed seconds after the lights went out.

That in itself could be a tough task, with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen also ahead of the Briton and Singapore a notoriously hard circuit for overtaking.

Vettel started on pole with driver's championship rival Lewis Hamilton fifth, but with three of the drivers who started ahead of the Briton on the grid out of the race the Mercedes driver received an unlikely break.

"This year I stopped eating chicken and then kind of went back to it and now I've stopped again".

Vettel made it through the first corner without getting collected by the other cars involved, but he then crashed out of the lead when he spun on the run out of Turn 3.

"For sure, it's bitter but it's done", said the four times Singapore GP victor, whose retirement ended a run of 18 successive points finishes.

"That was the most frustrating thing, frustrating not to get that first win here. I don't want to catch any of that stuff", he said. This is the first abandonment of the season for the German.

Stoffel Vandoorne secured seventh, followed by Lance Stroll in eighth and Romain Grosjean in ninth place.

French rookie Esteban Ocon scored the final point for Force India in tenth. Only 12 of the 20 cars finished.
