Cowboys game with Texans canceled; players say this is bigger than football

JJ Watt Foundation Harvey fundraiser at Pewaukee High School

The preseason game between the Houston Texans and the Dallas Cowboys has been canceled so the Texans' players and staff can return to their families in Houston.

Tickets for the relocated game went on sale Tuesday night and more than 40,000 were sold with the proceeds going to the hurricane relief fund. Tickets were available online starting Tuesday night.

"I think that it's been an unbelievable display of what can happen when people come together", Watt said. "There are no guarantees in football - that's not what I'm here to say". It's bigger than a game.

Watt nearly didn't know to react to the stunning growth of his flood relief fundraising effort, which started with a web page and a selfie video Sunday. As of Wednesday morning, the fund had raised more than $5.1 million and Watt also raised the goal of the fundraiser to $6 million. The original goal was $200,000. Strunk's father owned the Houston Oilers when the franchise moved to Nashville in 1997. The team is now working with the American Red Cross to create a site to accept donations. "It speaks to the good in people".

Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien walks up the sidelines during the first quarter of an NFL pre-season football game against the New Orleans Saints at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, in New Orleans.

"This isn't a story", Peters said of his situation as he packed up electronics in his rot-smelling home. Instead, they're using the Cowboys' 91-acre practice facility near Dallas.

"To see so many people support, to see so many people share the message, spread the message that's incredible and that's what Houston's all about, it's a very diverse city, it's a very resilient city, it's been through things like this before".

FCS heavyweights Sam Houston State and Richmond will play on Friday, Sept. 1 in Waco, TX, on the home field of Baylor University.

"It's not easy, but being a professional athlete isn't", linebacker Brian Cushing said.

With the devastation that the city of Houston as well as the surrounding areas have sustained due to Tropical Storm Harvey, Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien praised the public for how they've helped one another in such a hard situation. O'Brien said there were about 10 players in Houston and that everyone associated with the club was accounted for.

Smith said there were shouts of joy when he told the players the game was canceled and they were heading home, according to ESPN. "Sometimes the issue is the cell service, not being able to get them on the cellphone". Witten is also doing what he can to help out.

The Texans might not be the only team that ends up only playing three preseason games. "I hope those guys are taking that serious so they can get out there and perform at the best of their ability".
