Congress to launch nationwide agitation against high tax on petrol

Says with crude oil price falling in int'l market, rise in petrol, diesel rates a crude jokeLudhiana, September 16Members of the Communist Party of India (CPI) protested the inordinate increase in the prices of petrol and diesel, despite fall in crude oil prices in the worldwide market. Giving the details he added that the excise duty on petrol was 133.47% and 400.86 % on diesel. "We will request the people arriving at petrol pumps to buy fuel to sign on our paper to protest against the Centre", a senior congress leader said.

Maken also stated that not just the petrol and diesel prices, but also the LPG and Kerosene prices were also hiked under the Modi government, not even sparing the poor.

Fearing the three-year high in the prices of these fuels, consumers believe that the concept of market-determined rates was tampered with by frequent tax hikes when the crude oil prices fell steeply and are ruling at exactly half the level of Dollars 107 per barrel in May 2014, even after rising in the last three months.

The Delhi Congress chief said burning holes in the pockets of the common people has become the benchmark of governance for the BJP.

The Delhi Congress will also hold a massive protest demonstration at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday (September 20) demanding the rollback of the excise and Value-Added Tax on petrol and diesel.

"Looting people, profiteering at their expense and squeezing their hard earned money is the sole aim of the BJP government".

Maken said though the prices of global crude oil have come by over 50 percent in the past three years, the benefits have not been passed on to the consumers.

"Considering the fall in crude oil prices in the global market, the prices of petrol and diesel should be '34 and '32, respectively". He said while the Modi government has spelt out "absurd" reasons such as "Hurricanes Harvey and Irma' for the increase in petrol and diesel prices and has dealt a devastating blow to the savings of the common people by brazenly increasing central excise duty 11 times in the past 3.5 years".

Congress has asked the Modi government to immediately make a course correction in the fuel prices or the opposition will call for a nationwide agitation. He also said that total contribution of petroleum to the central and state exchequers would touch Rs 5.24 lakh crore in 2016-17.

Congress Spokesperson Ajay Maken said the party's Delhi unit will launch a campaign at petrol pumps across the city to protest against the fule price hikes and collect 10 lakh signatures, which will be submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
