Comedian Shelley Berman Dead At 92

He scored his greatest success in standup comedy, comedy records, movies, and on television, where he enjoyed a late-career success earning an Emmy Award nomination for playing Larry David's father on Curb Your Enthusiasm.

News of Berman's death has left the word in mourning. One of his routines involved portraying his own father when the then-18-year-old Shelley called home to ask for $100 for acting school.

Right now, I'm a bit of a wreck, having spent much of the last couple of hours crying, pacing, being unable to concentrate, and, frankly, being conflicted as to how I should feel about all of this.

Berman said in his introduction to his 2013 poetry book, "To Laughter With Questions", "I have always written". You know, Shelley would sit down.

Famed comedian Shelley Berman has died.

According to the Facebook post, a public memorial for the actor will follow a private service for family and friends. He also made several appearances on TV shows like, "Boston Legal", "The Blues Brothers Animated Series", "L.A. Law" and countless others - including a came on "Hannah Montana". However, his career spanned decades before that. (Newhart has long admitted that Berman did the routine before him, but points out that the "telephone monologue" has been around almost since its invention.) And while Berman somewhat bitterly noted that it made Newhart a star, he certainly did all right for himself too: The success of Inside Shelley Berman blazed a trail for comedy albums to follow, and it landed him on the era's biggest variety shows and inside huge venues like Carnegie Hall-the first comic to headline there. One of his earliest and most notable gag was his "telephone conversation" comedy. He would make seven comedy albums, including 1959's Inside Shelley Berman, which became not only the first comedy album to achieve gold certification, but the first non-music album to win a Grammy. It raced to number two on the Billboard album chart and also netted Berman a Grammy Award.

A Chicago native, Berman was born on February 3, 1925.
