Colin Firth granted Italian dual citizenship

Colin Firth granted Italian dual citizenship

His wife Livia Giuggioli, who is Italian, has also applied for British citizenship.

The pair have been married since 1997 and live in the Chiswick, London with their two sons, Matteo, 13, and Luca, 16.

Confirming the granting of citizenship, the Italian interior ministry said the "celebrated" 57-year-old British actor "has married a citizen of our nation and has expressed on many occasions his love for our country".

Home Office figures this week revealed that applications for British citizenship from Germans, French, Italians, and other countries which comprised the 14 original countries in the European Union have more than trebled since the year before the referendum.

The Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA-winner has vowed to remain "extremely British", but said the move seemed "sensible" in the current political climate.

"My wife and I are both extremely proud of our own countries", Firth said. We feel that we've made a gift of that to each other.

Colin's two children with Livia were born in Rome and the kids already possess dual British-Italian citizenship. According the Associated Press, Firth said in a statement that they never took much issue with each of them having passports from two different countries.

Rejecting clams he was betraying Britain, he added: "I will always be extremely British [you only have to look at or listen to me]".

'Britain is our home and we love it here.

'Many colleagues, including Emma Thompson, are, like me, enthusiastic Europeans, and we still can not believe it'. He said it will be "a huge privilege" for him to join Livia and his children in being dual citizens.

A number of member states, including France, Germany and Ireland, have reported an increase in Britons seeking a new nationality following the UK's decision to leave the bloc.

The Italian announcement came just hours after British Prime Minister Theresa May flew to Florence to make a keynote speech to try to revive stalled Brexit negotiations and reassure anxious business leaders.
