China's Strongest Typhoon of the Year Landing this Week

Observatory forecasts Talim stronger than Hato

The most intense rain and wind across this area will occur Wednesday night into Thursday as Talim's center passes just to the north of Taiwan.

But the latest storm trackers indicate that both storms could now miss China entirely.

However, the typhoon has been changing its course and does not seem to be completely predictable in the moment.

No watches or warnings have been issued yet for Taiwan by its Central Weather Bureau.

Autumn (September-November) is usually when China experiences some of its most powerful storms.

China's National Meteorological Center on Tuesday warned that Typhoon Talim could intensify and turn into a super typhoon as it churns towards Taiwan and Zhejiang and Fujian provinces on the Chinese mainland.

Typhoon Talim was forecast to hit several cities along the central and northern sections of the Fujian coastline, including Fuzhou and Ningde, reported The South China Morning Post, citing the chief engineer at the province's meteorological bureau, Ms Liu Aiming.

One forecaster told the South China Morning Post that Talim may be as powerful as Hurricane Irma, which devastated much of the Caribbean before it struck the U.S. state of Florida this week.

Taiwan's Formosa Petrochemical Corp may shut port as typhoon Talim approaches, though it is waiting for a government directive, a company spokesman says.

At 5 a.m. Wednesday, the eye of Talim, this year's 18th typhoon in the region, was above the northwestern Pacific Ocean, 760 km southeast of Zhejiang Province, packing winds up to 38 meters per second. However, the storm is expected to intensify into a typhoon soon. While typhoons have been a regular feature in Taiwan, the frequency and intensity have increased in the last few years, due to which the 23 million residents also take these alerts and evacuations more seriously. Now it looks as though Shanghai will be likely spared from the storm. Liu also feared that by the time it reaches China, Talim could be a "super typhoon", nearly equal to a category four or five hurricane in the US. Doksuri is moving northwest and its eye is now over the South China Sea. It might still brush by southern Hainan, however. Experts had even feared that waves in Zhejiang and Fujian could reach as high as six or seven meters.
