China shows interest in high speed railway projects in India

India-Japan railway cooperation for building bullet train 'pleases' China

"We have disputes on the eastern section of the boundary".

"You must be very clear that boundary of India China border area has not been totally delimited and we have disputes in the eastern section of the boundary".

Bharatiya Janata Party chief Amit Shah on September 16 responded to China's objection to Japan's plans for investment in the development of India's northeastern states.

The India-Japan joint statement mentioned cooperation between the two countries to improve infrastructure and development in the North-East region.

She added: "We are now trying to seek a solution through negotiations that is acceptable to both sides".

The recent visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to India and the subsequent talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saw the discussion of several important issues, including China's expansion through its OBOR (One Belt One Road) initiative, and laying the foundation stone of India's first bullet train, made with the aid of Japan.

Japan will extend a loan of Rs 2,239 crore to India for "North East Road Network Connectivity Improvement Project" to improve the National Highway 40 (NH-40) and construct a bypass on NH-54 in the Northeast. "This is China's position", she said.

About the India-Japan joint statement, Hua said, "The statement mentioned resolving disputes through negotiation and dialogue".

Japan and India have agreed to enhance cooperation in the India-Pacific region where China is increasingly becoming assertive. "Under such circumstances, various parties should respect such aspects and any third party should not be involved in our efforts to resolve the disputes", Hua said.

"We hope that all parties can make concerted efforts to uphold the freedom of navigation and overflight enjoyed by all countries in relevant waters under the global law and stay committed to settling the issues and disputes between them through dialogue and consultation", she added. Hua hoped that close ties between India and Japan were conducive to regional peace and stability. For example, Mr. Abe said North Korea was a "joint" challenge for India and Japan, and the statement contained a phrase about holding countries "that have supported North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes" accountable, obviously aimed at Pyongyang's benefactors in Beijing.

"To that end, we agreed on a India Japan Act East Forum which will essentially explore the possibilities of involving Japan in northeastern infrastructure", Jaishankar said.
