Beware of Georgia Power post-Irma scams!

Power Out For More Than 60 Percent Of Florida Homes And Businesses

The state's largest utility company gave its updated estimates Tuesday on Twitter.

Some Florida utilities, including FPL, had warned customers it could take weeks to restore power in the hardest hit areas.

As of Thursday afternoon, Georgia Power has restored power to more than 850,000 customers, with another 135,000 still awaiting restoration.

FPL is restoring power according to its detailed plan, which includes generation facilities going back on line first which restores power to critical infrastructure such as hospitals, police stations and 911 services, then they restore feeders which feeds the largest amount of customers along those lines and then come the smaller lines into individual neighborhoods. Call 911 for life-threatening emergencies. Power was restored to 3.2 million customers. "The number of poles down appears to be significantly less than what we expected to see", said Gould.

Irma, which ranked as one of the most powerful Atlantic storms on record before striking the USA mainland as a Category 4 hurricane on September 10, killed at least 84 people.

Meanwhile, many Southwest Florida residents remain frustrated that they are among the minority still without power.

There were 477 Tri-County EMC members waiting to have their power restored on Saturday morning, including 265 in Jones, 112 in Baldwin, 83 in Putnam County, 16 in Twiggs and one in Wilkinson. Typically, restoration workers don't know restoration times.

About 46,000 of Georgia Power's customers still didn't have power Friday, according to the utility's state-wide outage map.

Even when winds have subsided, conditions can be unsafe. Do not attempt to remove or trim foliage within 10 feet of a power line. On Monday, when most customers were without power, the storm weakened to a tropical depression.
