Bengals reportedly give contract extension to Vontaze Burfict

Burfict, 26, is now playing under the final year of a four-year, $19 million extension he signed with Cincinnati back in 2014. Then, off the heels of tackling his own teammate coming off an ACL injury in a non-tackling drill, he hit a defenseless player in a preseason game that drew a five-game suspension that was reduced to three.

The numbers are a significant bump from Burfict's last contract, a four-year deal signed in 2014 worth $19 million with $6.94 million guaranteed. Not only that, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, a member of the NFL's competition committee, publicly disputed the league's claims that Burfict hit Kansas City fullback Anthony Sherman from the side or the back and that Sherman was out of the play.

Burfict, 26, has led the Bengals in tackles three times and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2013. He will miss the first three games of the campaign due to a suspension for repeated violations of on-field safety rules. "We have worked hard at training, developing and retaining talented players".

"That's the thing about it", defensive coordinator Paul Guenther said-in a good way, to be clear.

How much to the Bengals value Burfict?

Even though he won't be at PBS for three more weeks and games, Burfict has been a subject Guenther has been pointing to this week as an example to his young players.

According to overthecap.com, in terms of annual dollars, the raw extension numbers would make Burfict the highest paid, "traditional" (or non-pass rushers like Von Miller) linebackers in the National Football League at $12.89 annually.

Thanks to numerous fines and suspensions during the first five years of his career, Burfict has lost out on $805,400.
