Barca tried and failed to land Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho in the summer, and reports in Spain now suggest they could switch their attentions to Mane in the hope that the Reds will be more open to doing a deal.

Barcelona claimed after the transfer window shut that Liverpool asked for £186million on deadline day to sell him, an assertion which Liverpool quickly rubbished.

The Brazilian worldwide Coutinho had been linked with a move to Barcelona during the summer and the Catalan giants reportedly had a number of bids rejected for the player, including one that was worth £138 million.

The 25-year-old is believed to have handed in a transfer request in order to force a move to Camp Nou, although the Reds held firm, which proved an unpopular decision with the player.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Philippe Coutinho "needs rhythm" after the midfielder was substituted on his first start of the season.

"I was interested by the offer but now my focus is on having a good season with Liverpool and with the national team", Coutinho told ESPN Brasil. As I have said, in life, in every job you get an offer, interested or not.

"It was a complicated month for me". But it is also a great honour being here. "I didn't want to change him at the end, that's why it looked a bit confused as we brought the subs on".

"I'm in a place where I've always been respected by everyone and I respected everyone too". Liverpool is a great club worldwide.
