Aurora theater shooter transferred to federal prison

James Holmes

In 2015, a jury convicted James Holmes of carrying out the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting rampage.

Holmes is serving a life sentence for the July 20, 2012 attack that killed 12 people and left more than 70 others injured.

Not long after that, however, Holmes effectively disappeared.

Holmes was moved from Colorado due to threats from another inmate, AP reports, but officials did not disclose where he was taken.

This week, that question was finally answered. That is according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons' website. The high-security facility, which houses only male inmates, is located 165 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

Authorities only would say that Holmes was moved to either a federal prison or another prison out of state.

Aurora theater shooter James Holmes has been moved to Allenwood Federal Prison in Pennsylvania.

Several survivors of the attack said they were upset after corrections officials quietly transferred Holmes.

Colorado has been working for months to place Holmes in federal custody.

Holmes was transferred past year after another inmate pushed his way through a partially open door and attacked him when he was being held in the Colorado State Penitentiary in Canon City, the state's highest security prison, AP said. The lead prosecutor told 11 News they may not have had the right to do that.
