Apple, Stanford testing if Apple Watch can detect heart problems

Apple Watch

That's according to CNBC, who indicate the Cupertino giant is working with both Stanford University and telemedicine company American Well in order to test whether the heart rate sensor on its smartwatch can pick up on abnormal heart rhythms in patients.

If the Apple Watch's heart rate monitor proves accurate for detecting sensitive heart signals, it could help identify arrhythmias, abnormal heart rhythms that show no external symptoms but increase a patient's risk for blood clots and strokes, among other complications. The collaboration has not been officially announced, but some believe the wearable could become an important screening tool. It goes without saying that when the Apple Watch is able to determine presence of this condition, the device could potentially save lives. When the study was published in May, cardiac electrophysiologist Greg Marcus, who was involved in the research, stated that Apple has the benefit of having real-time access to raw data from its Apple Watch's heart sensor.

"We started working on the Apple Watch several years ago", he said, and one goal was "performing some measurements of your health that people were not measuring, at least continually".

Apple hasn't made an official announcement about specific Apple Watch and heart related projects. That is, Apple Watch will now notify you if you have an elevated heart rate but don't appear to be active. CNBC also reported that month that Apple has been in talks with developers, hospitals and other industry groups about bringing clinical data, such as detailed lab results and allergy lists, to its devices. We're extremely interested in this area.

WatchOS 4, Apple's latest revision of the software for its smartwatches, will be available to the public on September 19. "And yes it is a business opportunity".
