About 1.5 million, mostly in Florida, without power in Irma's wake

US President Donald Trump says devastation left by Hurricane Irma was far greater than anyone expected

Earlier in his one-day visit to Florida, Trump also lauded state and federal officials for their preparation and response to the hurricane.

Hollywood Police Chief Tom Sanchez said investigators believe the deaths at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills were heat-related, and added: "The building has been sealed off and we are conducting a criminal investigation".

Broward County Medical Examiner Dr. Craig Mallak said his office had received the bodies of two of the victims - women ages 71 and 78 - for autopsies.

The president and first lady Melania Trump - both sporting white baseball hats - were greeted on the tarmac by Vice President Mike Pence, who landed a bit before the Trumps; Florida Gov. Rick Scott and his wife; Florida Sen.

"The suspicion is that these deaths should not have occurred", NPR's Jon Hamilton reported from the scene Wednesday.

There's a reason a criminal investigation is underway, probing exactly how the staff at Hollywood Hills could have allowed this to happen.

Calls to the owner and other officials at the Hollywood home were not immediately returned, but the facility's administrator, Jorge Carballo, said in a statement that it was "cooperating fully with relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances that led to this unfortunate and tragic outcome". Some of the patients admitted to nearby Memorial Regional Hospital had temperatures of up to 106 degrees, hospital officials said Thursday. Randy Katz, told reporters.

When asked why the patients hadn't been taken across the street to Memorial Regional hospital when temperatures became unsafe, Hollywood city spokeswoman Rayelin Storey said, "We can't get inside the heads of the staff and the administrators of this facility".

At least five people died and more than a dozen were treated after breathing carbon monoxide fumes from generators in the Orlando, Miami and Daytona Beach areas. We continue to maintain close communications with local, state, and federal officials and the appropriate utility companies and aid organizations to ensure that power is restored to every facility in Florida as soon as possible.

President Donald Trump has announced he will visit Florida on Thursday to survey the extent of the damage and meet with the Coast Guard, FEMA and other first responders.

Floridians are returning to their homes and businesses amid the destruction left by fierce Hurricane Irma that also ravaged several states in the southeast USA and islands in the Caribbean.

The Keys felt Irma's full fury when the hurricane roared in on Sunday with 130 miles per hour winds. The storm killed at least 33 in Florida.

On Wednesday, he climbed down from what had been the upper floor of his home on a ladder, wearing only underwear and flip-flops because the wind blew away his clean clothes.

Amber Mickles, who was looking for her great-grandmother, aged 94, told the New York Post: "Imagine the heat, I am 29 and I can't take it and for them to have to sit through is awful". And my trousers, my phone, my wallet are all gone. He told Scott, "at a certain point it ends for you but I don't want it to end, I hope he runs for the Senate".

Mr Trump has promised to return to Florida "numerous times" as thousands of people begin the painstaking task of rebuilding their homes - adding that Irma's destruction was on a scale "nobody has seen before".

French President Emmanuel Macron has vowed to swiftly rebuild the French Caribbean islands.

Critics have accused France, the United Kingdom and Netherlands of not doing enough to help hurricane victims in their overseas territories.
