A Robot Performed Unaided Dental Surgery on a Human Patient

A robot in China performed dental surgery on a living person

The oral surgery happened in Xian, Shaanxi, which took an hour. The machinery was engineered by Beihang University and Fourth Military Medical University.

Experts say robot surgery, or robot-assisted surgery, allows doctors to perform complicated surgery with more precision, but some question whether these operations are safe. The unnamed woman had two false teeth, both custom made for her mouth thanks to a 3D printer, implanted into her mouth by an autonomous robot, who received no outside assistance or guidance from human dentists.

A robot has carried out a dental operation without help from humans for the first time, carrying out implant surgery on a patient in China, reported The Independent.

The report on the surgery pointed out that dental surgeons are working within a small space inside the mouth, including some areas that are hard to see, which often makes surgery difficult to carry out.

An epidemiological survey has found there were about 400 million patients needing new teeth in China, but the number of qualified dentists was lagging behind demand.

Patients are also at risk of poor surgery carried out by unqualified dentists, which can lead to further complications.

According to the report, the robot followed a set of pre-programmed commands to install the dental implants. The robot also presents some benefits over human surgeons. The robot, after testing to make sure everything was correct, was able to drill the cavities for the implants.

In recent years robots have increasingly been used to assist dentists with procedures such as root canal surgery and orthodontic operations as well as in training students.
