The Yankees made the move Saturday before hosting the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox.
Tanaka reportedly told the team that his arm simply feels exhausted and there is no structural damage the team is concerned about. Unfortunately, he joins C.C. Sabathia as recent additions to the Yankees' DL.
Tanaka came out of last Wednesday's start in Toronto after four innings where he allowed three runs and issued a career-high five walks. After the game, Tanaka told the team he was ailing. "So we decided he just needs a break".
"Looking at myself in the mirror, I thought it would be hard to take the mound in my best condition so I talked to (management) about it", said Tanaka, who last went on the DL in April 2015 with right wrist tendinitis and a strained forearm. Rather, Tanaka was feeling more worn out.
Tanaka won't throw for five days and said he then plans to resume his throwing program.
Tanaka's latest injury is not believed to be related to the partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow that he sustained in July 2014. Starter Jordan Montgomery was recalled from Triple-A to replace him.
Tanaka, struggling through an uneven season with a 4.92 ERA, was scheduled to open the Subway Series against the Mets on Monday.
He is having by far his worst and most-inconsistent season with an 8-10 record and a 4.92 ERA in 23 starts. "I'm not looking to be away for a long time".
