South Korea President Moon urges 'complete' overhaul of military

US 'Favorably Inclined' to Boosting S.Korean Missile Power

China, which is North Korea's closest ally despite its anger at Pyongyang's missile and nuclear programs, described the situation as "complex and sensitive", and urged calm and a return to talks. Eight in 10 Republicans, 75 percent of Democrats and 72 percent of Independents said they thought North Korea's nuclear program was a critical threat to the U.S. The reclusive country's supreme leader was also universally unpopular: Just 1 percent of Republicans, 3 percent of Democrats and 1 percent of Independents said they had a very favorable opinion of Kim Jong Un.

The spokesman stressed that South Korea will firmly respond to North Korean provocations based on their solid alliance with the U.S. He warned Pyongyang not to test or misjudge the Seoul-Washington alliance.

"The Korean-style earlier preemptive attack will burn up all the objects in the areas under the control of the first and third field armies of the puppet forces including Seoul the moment the USA reckless attempt at preemptive attack is spotted", the KCNA said in an English-language version of the article.

"In the North, I may not be rich, but I would better understand people around me and wouldn't be treated like dirt as I have been in the South", Kwon told The Times.

The other options were conducting airstrikes on nuclear production facilities (40 percent), sending US troops to destroy nuclear facilities (28 percent), accepting that North Korea will possess nuclear weapons in exchange for producing no more (21 percent), and accepting that North Korea will produce more nuclear weapons (11 percent).

The ICBM had the range to strike Alaska or Hawaii, according to experts.

The United States now maintains some 28,500 U.S. troops in South Korea as part of its defense alliance.

The latest threats and rising tensions with North Korea don't appear to be rattling Koreans living in North Texas any more than usual.

South Korea is a target of the North with armaments pointed at it from across the border, so the absence of an ambassador could understandably cause Seoul alarm. After months of bombastic language on both sides, she explained, "no one feels scared anymore".

The South Korean capital, Seoul, is within range of massed North Korean rockets and artillery, which would be impossible to destroy in a first USA strike.

"I go to Korea because my family is there", said Lynn Park, of Plano.

The South's Ministry of Unification (MOU) said on Wednesday that the Moon administration will "make consistent efforts for reconciliation and cooperation between the two Koreas and peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula".

"Most of all, it is important to secure capabilities that will ensure our victory in modern warfare and prepare us against North Korea's developing nuclear arms and missiles", he added. During a crisis, there would be no good way to protect USA citizens, particularly in a densely populated urban area.

White House sources told reporters not to "read too much into" Trump's comments, describing them as "improvised" rather than the carefully vetted languages we have come to expect from former USA presidents. For now, South Koreans appear relatively unfazed to the presidential war of words compared to their American counterparts who are thousands of miles away, but who are also now possibly in reach of Pyongyang too.
