Philippe Coutinho Rocks Liverpool With Transfer Request

Liverpool Transfer News LIVE updates

Liverpool have denied reports that Philippe Coutinho has handed in a transfer request.

On Wednesday, the Reds rejected a 100 million euros bid (£90m) from Barcelona for the 25-year-old, who is out of Saturday's trip to Watford with injury.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also said on Thursday that the club had no plans to let Coutinho leave.

Sky Sports are now reporting the Brazilian has taken the matter into his own hands as he formally requests to be sold.

"We wish to offer clarity as regards our position on a possible transfer of Philippe Coutinho", the statement from Fenway Sports Group read.

Despite looking elsewhere, there is certainly unfinished business between Barcelona, Liverpool and Coutinho in this transfer window, and this afternoon's news will improve the likelihood of them securing the signature of their number one transfer target.

On the subject of Liverpool's injuries, Klopp said: "Adam Lallana had this unlucky injury, Daniel [Sturridge] had a fantastic pre-season, he was close for this weekend but I'm pretty sure he'll be ready for Tuesday [against Hoffenheim]". The club did bring AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea forward Dominic Solanke and Hull City left-back Andrew Robertson not all of them are exactly the high-profile players Liverpool fans were hoping to see arrive.

The Catalans, who only managed to win the King's Cup last season in a disappointing campaign, face Liga champions Real Madrid on Sunday in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup.

Liverpool will not be winning a Premier League title anytime soon if they sell Coutinho to Barcelona, that is according to club legend Steve Nicol.

On that occasion, owner John W Henry also played hardball, effectively forcing Suarez to stay for another year, until Barcelona came calling with a better offer. It's just that Phil is not available for us and for me that's the bigger issue.

I try to be a football romantic in a world of corporate business but I would love to see Watford splash the cash on a proven player that we have heard of and will show the rest of the league that we mean business.
