Mueller Probing Whether Flynn Helped Seek Clinton Emails from Russian Hackers

Details of Mueller’s Russian investigation leak and two of his targets are named

"The special counsel needs to be protected from any political interference ... right now our fear is that the president would seek to fire Robert Mueller", Blumenthal said on "New Day".

Mr. Mueller's team is also inquiring about the nature of Mr. Smith's relationship with several Trump campaign advisers and aides to the president, the people familiar with the matter said.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller issued grand jury subpoenas in recent days seeking testimony from public relations executives who worked on an global campaign organized by Paul Manafort, people directly familiar with the matter told NBC News. Anyone who has followed the Russian Federation investigation understands that it is complex.

At the time, neither Manafort nor the firms had registered as foreign agents. A criminal investigation into Manafort's foreign activity, which stretches back many years, was underway even before the 2016 election. The stated goal was to build support for Ukraine's entry into the European Union.

Manafort was in the room during the now-infamous June 9, 2016 meeting in which top Trump campaign officials met with a Russian lawyer who claimed to have dirt on Hillary Clinton.

FBI agents raided a home he owns in Alexandria, Virginia last month, and he is under federal scrutiny for his work for the Party of Regions, his offshore banking transactions, and mounting questions about whether he used his complex web of real estate dealings to launder money from Eastern Europe. Friday's revelations are another sign of that focus.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Mueller is digging into connections between Flynn and Peter Smith, a former GOP operative who was trying to get his hands on 33,000 emails that were deleted from Clinton's private server before his suicide in May.

President Trump has been furious about the ongoing investigation.
