MACC team raids Penang exco's office, seizes documents

Court 'no' to review of Penang exco's remand (Updated)

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers have raided the service centre of Penang state executive councillor Phee Boon Poh.

Phee was also represented by lawyer Ram Karpal Singh while the other two were represented by Dev Kumaraendran.

He said since all high courts of Malaya can hear cases from other parts of West Malaysia, they would head to Alor Setar since Sunday was a working day there.

"Since the Penang High Court is not open on Sunday, we are here in Kedah to file our submissions".

Phee's lawyer, R.S.N. Rayer said he will appeal the remand order.

Phee, who is also Sungai Puyu assemblyman, was escorted by MACC officers into a vehicle at about noon to his service centre in Jalan Ong Yi How here.

High Court Judge Datuk Hashim Hamzah also declined to do so for the remand orders against the 35-year-old director and 70-year-old manager of the factory.

The MACC is believed to be investigating an issue regarding a sawdust factory in Bukit Mertajam suspected of flouting environmental regulations.

Phee, who is state Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman, was detained on Friday after he went to the MACC office to have his statement recorded.

On Thursday, MACC officers seized documents related to the Kampung Sungai Lembu factory from the Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP).

Several PKR leaders told Malaysiakini that they could stomach her act of complaining about the illegal factory to the MACC in support of the residents.

The commission had conducted a joint raid on the factory yesterday, together with officers from the Department of Environment and Immigration Department.
