Local Rally In Solidarity With Charlottesville

Activists take part in a rally in Washington Square Park in January

However, Hope Trachtenburg-Fifer said she was disappointed with the vigil because there was no specific mention of the widespread anti-Semitism at the Charlottesville rallies. "That's the strength of this group", said New Orleans DSA organizer Allison DeJong, "We have the strength of the national organization, but organizing is always one-to-one".

"We stand with our neighbors and our nation against hate tonight after the terrorism white supremacists committed in Charlottesville", the group wrote on it's Facebook page.

Hundreds gathered in Burlington's City Hall Park in solidarity on Sunday night including a woman from Charlottesville named Lisa Green. One person was killed and close to 30 people were injured after a vehicle driven by an alleged Nazi sympathizer slammed into a crowd of counterprotestors.

Among the injured is Bill Burke, a Hockingport resident who had attended the counter-protest against the white supremacist rally, according to a previous Post report.

Three more men have been arrested in connection to the violent clashes.

Her husband is Mexican, she said, and she sees racial hatred on a regular basis. "This is a moment for folks across differences to come together and to recognize that we're not alone and that there are more of us". "We want to make sure it has no foot hold here".

Numerous speakers at the rally spoke about acknowledging one's privileges in terms of race, gender, sexuality and socio-economic class as an important step toward equality.

"We need to let people know that what was happening in Charlottesville is wrong", Johnston said, shrugging off the Valley heat, urging unity to stop the "possibly growing movement of white supremacists and Neo-Nazis". "White people staying silent on these issues emboldens the racist Nazis in our midst".
