Earlier this week, Trump said that North Korea would be met with "fire and fury" if it made further threats against the USA, and then on Thursday, he suggested that those words may not have been "tough enough" after the threats from North Korea continued.
This is a stark contrast to Trump's earlier Friday comments, which claimed that the USA was "locked and loaded" for a retaliatory act against North Korea should they attack Guam as they'd claimed to have planned. On Thursday, Trump said his previous statement may not have been tough enough.
"Trump and Macron pledged to work together with allies and partners to enforce United Nations sanctions and achieve denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula", the White House said.
North Korea warned foreign diplomats to leave Pyongyang in 2013 when it suspended work at a joint inter-Korean industrial park and threatened missile strikes on US Pacific bases, notably in Guam and Hawaii. "That's not who we are". If Ukraine and Russian Federation can be said to engage in public diplomacy on Twitter when they battle each other with memes, then it could also arguably be a form of diplomacy for Trump to seek to deter North Korea with tweets, alarming as those tweets may be. For one, they didn't want to put somebody in a corner.
"We'll see what happens", he told Fox News. But Mattis said Thursday that the American effort was "diplomatically led".
