Defence Minister Arun Jaitley visited HAL's facility in Bangalore, capital of India's southern state of Karnataka, Aug. 26 to launch production of the 12,000-pound-class maximum-takeoff-weight Light Combat Helicopter.
Midhani and DRDO which have, in association with Israeli Aircraft Industries (IAI), manufactured the LRSAM, the minister said preparedness is the best defence considering the current geopolitical situation.

"Hawk-i is capable of delivering precision munitions including Air to Ground and close combat weapons, self defense capabilities through electronic warfare (EW) systems, digital map generator and operational reliability through new dual hot standby mission computer avionics architecture supported by indigenous high accuracy and high altitude radio altimeter, IFF MKXII, data transfer system, CMDS and RWR", read a statement by HAL. "It is extremely necessary that we came out of this mindset that India will always be a buyer of defence equipment. We were willing to buy from the rest of the world but somewhat wary of our companies and their abilities to develop products", he said. "Our narrow policies have contributed to this". "We are now evolving into a major manufacturing hub not only for our own requirements but also for supplying to other countries in the world", he said. At the BEML campus in Bengaluru, which builds metro coaches, he inaugurated the third metro line.
The minister also inaugurated a Rs 48-crore rocket motor static test facility at BDL's Ibrahimpatnam Complex, laid the foundation stone for the second-hase construction of facilities at the same unit which is a '522 crore investment by BDL, inaugurated the Astra weapon system production unit and a 5 MW solar photovoltaic power project.
This would increase the metro auto manufacturing capacity from the current number of 18 coaches a month to 27.
